As I have told you before, a trip to Santorini was one of those things that I had written on my bucket list for a looong long time, this is why I wanted this experience to be unforgettable. It was also a special moment for me and Adrian as it was a gift from him celebrating 5 years of relationship. But let’s get over this sentimental moment and share you some tips and tricks for a perfect trip to Santorini.
First of all it is a very small island and you don’t need to rent a car for getting from one place to another as it has 3 main roads and all very narrow. We thought an ATV is the perfect vehicle to move from one place to another and I still think it was the best choice. We have rented ours from a place in Fira called Panos Roussos Rentals (www.santoriniscooters.com) and couldn’t been more satisfied with it and the nice Panos who explained us in detail of how the ATV works and which are the best roads for it.
As I have said we choose to stay in Fira at the San Marino Suites (see more details about the place here) and again it was the right choice to make as Fira is the capital of Santorini and its center is the best place for restaurants, clubs and souvenir shops on the island. Also the San Marino Suites is one of the few hotels in Fira that have a spectacular view to the sea and a big and green garden and also a pool and bar zone ready for a day of fun.
Oia is a must see place, especially during sunset, but it is not necessary to stay there the whole time if you are an active person and can’t stay put. There are a lot of beautiful narrow streets that you can get lost in and many restaurants where you can take a romantic dinner with the greatest view of the sunset and the beautifully painted white and blue Doms. We went to Oia 3 times in three days and it is 13-14 kilometers away from Fira, so in 20-25 minutes with the ATV you can get there. The best way to Oia from Fira is the one to Vorvoulos as the road is much safer and with less serpentines than the one on the mountain.
The best Gyros Pita in Fira, because trust me we have tasted them all, is the one from the McDaniels bar and the bets pancakes are from Crepe House. Must try these two places.
A good place from watching the sunset in Fira that not so many people know is behind the parking lot at Mama Thira Restaurant. You can grab a picnic blanket and two drinks and have the most romantic and unexpensive date there 😀
The nearby cities are Pyrgos at 4/5 km away from Fira and it is great to see during the evening as it is a city placed on a colline and when the lights in the houses turn on, the view is absolutely magical.
There are two (or let’s say three) major beaches that you can go to, but you must know that Santorini is not well known from its beaches, but from its spectacular views from the cliffs to the sea. One is the Red beach that has red sand from the red cliff behind it and it is 12 km south west of Fira, located only some steps away from the ancient site of Akrotiri. And there is also Kamari beach right next to Perissa beach and it is a black sand beach. You can do all kind of water sports here.
